Freezing temperatures trigger the death of fat cells through a process known as apoptosis.  Apoptosis occurs naturally in the body and plays a critical role in maintaining the health of the body by eliminating old, unnecessary, and unhealthy cells.

Fat cells are energy stores for the body, and the walls of fat cells are more unstable than other body tissues cells. When freezing temperatures are applied to the skin, it triggers apoptosis in fat cells, leaving muscle, tendon and other connective tissues unaffected.

As the fat cell walls to begin to break down - undergoing this safe and naturally occurring process - the cell releases it's contents, which are then flushed away by the lymph system.

Cold temperatures cause the blood vessels within the tissue to widen and narrow (vaso-dilation/vaso-constriction). This increases localized micro-circulation in the skin, flushing nutrient and oxygen rich blood into the tissues which stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. The results is tighter, stronger, healthier skin with improved elasticity and reduced appearance of sagging and wrinkles over time.
